Blood Glucose Tests

These are very important in monitoring your diabetes. They tell you exactly how much glucose is in your blood.

First of all you need to have test strips and a blood glucose meter.

A blood glucose test can be done easily by taking a small drop of blood from the side of your finger with lancing device.

Tips for successful testing

  1. Wash your hands with warm water and dry them.* (This will remove anything on your hands that may affect your results).
  2. Prick the side of your finger with your lancing device.
  3. Don't squeeze your finger. Instead, hold your hand down below your waist for about 5 seconds.
  4. Apply the blood to the test strip and wait for the meter to display your result.

*If you are going out for the day and you will not be near a bathroom or a sink, place a wet cloth in a plastic bag to wipe your fingers with before you test your blood glucose. It is best not to use 'wet wipes' since these can actually affect your blood glucose result.

How often to test

Usually the best time to test your blood is before your meals and before bed. If you are sick, your blood glucose levels may be affected. Therefore, you need to test more often in case your insulin dose needs adjusting. Your healthcare team will tell you how often you need to test in a day.
